How Long Does it Take to Build Custom Furniture?
The timeline to build custom furniture varies significantly based on several factors, including the complexity of the design, the materials used, the craftsmanship required, and our current workload. Understanding these elements gives you a clearer picture of what to expect when ordering a bespoke piece.
Design and Planning Phase
The first step in creating custom furniture is the design and planning phase. This takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on how detailed your requirements are and how quickly you and the designer can finalize the plans. During this stage, you’ll discuss your vision, preferences, and requirements with the designer or craftsman. They’ll create sketches, select materials, and provide cost estimates. If revisions are needed, this process can extend the timeline. Chat with our designers.
Material Sourcing
Once the design is approved, the next step is sourcing materials. High-quality woods, metals, fabrics, and finishes may need to be ordered from specialty suppliers, which can take additional time. In some cases, particularly with rare or custom-order materials, this stage might add a few weeks to the overall timeline.
Construction Time
The actual construction of custom furniture ranges from a few weeks to several months. Simpler pieces, such as a basic coffee table, might be completed in 1 to 2 weeks. More intricate designs, such as custom cabinetry or elaborately detailed pieces, take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks or longer. This timeframe includes the actual building process, as well as finishing touches like sanding, staining/painting, and sealing, which all contribute to the final quality of the piece.
Production Schedule
Because each piece of custom furniture is unique, during the construction phase, we only work on one project at a time. We’ve found this is the best way to dedicate the necessary amount of attention and detail each piece requires. We typically schedule 4-6 custom furniture projects or more at a time which means a 2-3 month lead time once a contract is signed with a client. During this time, our designers work on sketches and sourcing materials for the upcoming pieces with clients. See some of our past work.
Final Adjustments and Delivery
After construction, the furniture may require final adjustments or touch-ups. This final phase can take an additional week or so. Delivery time also needs to be factored in, especially if the piece is large or if the delivery involves special handling.
In summary, while the timeline to build custom furniture varies, it’s generally advisable to plan for at least 8 to 12 weeks from initial contract to final delivery. This allows for a thorough process that ensures quality and precision, resulting in a unique piece of custom furniture that perfectly fits your needs and space.
